In the late 1990s, Dubai existed in a state far removed from the shimmering metropolis we recognize today. It lay cocooned in a quiet charm, untouched by the frenzied construction that would later define its skyline. Each corner of the city bore the delicate imprint of the past, very pristine, retaining a small-town essence that whispered of bygone times.
Amidst this still calm and comfy town, one gem stood out for us, as a family: It was the mosque just past Union Square on Jumeirah Beach Road. As we drove down Beach Road on our way to the beach or at night to the Shopping Centre, its graceful silhouette never failed to capture our admiration. There are many magnificent mosques around the city now but it is just this little one, now rather invisible among all the others that is special to us.
Although Mohamed Hamida's painting, the "Fairytale Mosque" does not depict the Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai with precision, it is thought as a tribute to it.
The painting is quite small like all paintings from that period, only 24 to 36 cms, but we wish it to be a tribute to the beautiful city which was our home for such a long time, for nearly a quarter of a century.
